The measures to combat the corona pandemic will generally be extended until March 7th. That is the result of the video conference between Chancellor Angela Merkel and the heads of government of the federal states on Wednesday.
Chancellor Merkel emphasized that the contact reductions were having an effect. The number of cases has decreased significantly. At the same time, new variants of the coronavirus spread. The mutation is a “reality”, said Merkel. The period until mid-March is therefore vital. Until then, the number of infections would have to fall further and the spread of the corona mutation had to be combated, said Merkel.
The previous rules still apply

The period until mid-March “is existential”
the next steps
With a view to the coming weeks and months, the Chancellor and the heads of government have laid down this further procedure, among other things:
- School and daycare centers: Openings in this area have priority. The first thing to do here is to reopen it step by step. The resolution stipulates: The individual federal states will decide on the gradual return to face-to-face teaching and the expansion of day-care facilities. “Masks, ventilation and hygiene measures will continue to be necessary,” says the decision. Rapid tests should also increasingly enable safe teaching and care in daycare centers and minimize the risk of infection.
- Hairdressers open from March 1st: Hairdressers can reopen from March 1st, subject to hygiene requirements, access control with reservations and the use of medical masks.
- Other openings: The next opening step can be carried out by the federal states with a stable incidence of a maximum of 35 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants. This should include the opening of the retail trade with a limit of one customer per 20 square meters, museums and galleries as well as the still closed body-oriented service companies.
- Regional rules if the number of cases is too high: In countries or counties which, due to their high 7-day incidence, do not fall below the incidence of 50, the countries or counties will maintain or expand extensive local or regional measures.
The Federal Chancellor and the heads of government of the federal states agreed to hold another consultation on March 3, 2021.
