Brief description:
Title, tears and triumphs: 1. FC Nürnberg can look back on a turbulent history that is now over 118 years old. The club celebrated its greatest successes in the “golden” 20s, when five of the nine championships were won. Until the 1960s, the club was one of the big names in German football.
But with the first descent from the upper house in 1969, a decade-long low began. Descents and scandals shaped the club, which earned its reputation as an elevator team during this time and even crashed into the third-rate regional league in 1996.
It was only in the new millennium that the club consolidated and continued the old days with the DFB Cup victory in 2007. However, the FCN is still stuck in the elevator. In 2007/2008 and 2013/2014 – two coach changes, a winless first half and last seven losses in a row included – the club relegated from the 1st Bundesliga and is the only record relegation in Germany. Since the resurgence in 2017/18, the FCN has also been the sole record climber in the football upper house.
German champions: 1920, 1921, 1924, 1925, 1927, 1936, 1948, 1961, 1968
DFB Cup winners: 1935, 1939, 1962, 2007
