The actor and reality star and businesswoman were dangerously close to Malaysia’s biggest fraudster
Leonardo DiCaprio may be used to being in the headlines for his young boyfriends, but now he’s in the news for a completely different reason. This time, the actor is in the spotlight, because of his relationship with fugitive cheater Joe Lowe.
The 48-year-old “Titanic” star was questioned by the FBI over his relationship with the Malaysian criminal who helped finance his hit film “The Wolf of Wall Street”.
Low has been absconding for almost eight years after a warrant was issued for his arrest in 2016 over his involvement in 1Malaysia Development Berhad.
He was the mastermind behind the sovereign wealth scheme that eventually led to the arrest of former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak for money laundering.
Earlier this week, Bloomberg reported previously undisclosed details from FBI documents that revealed how, in an effort to track down Joe Lowe, the feds decided to speak to DiCaprio in 2018 after learning he had a number of dealings with the criminal after they met in a nightclub in 2010.
The two are said to have become good friends as a result and even had nicknames for each other.
The scammer called DiCaprio “Ldog” and DiCaprio called him “my man.”
In a report cited by THR, DiCaprio said, “I worked for him and this business of ours turned into something more. We saw each other more often and spent more time together”
But while the two were good friends, their relationship apparently soured when Lowe reneged on his promise to donate money to the 2015 environmental fundraiser.
As part of the FBI’s investigation into Lowe, agents seized a number of gifts the con artist had given the actor, including a first edition copy of The Great Gatsby.
The actor told the FBI he didn’t know where Lowe’s wealth came from.
Leo isn’t the only celebrity the FBI has questioned.
According to the report, the scammer also worked with Kim Kardashian. She admitted to authorities that Lowe offered her paintings by Jean-Michel Basquiat.
However, it’s worth noting that neither Kardashian nor DiCaprio have been questioned about being personally suspected of any wrongdoing.
