The Favorite Public Figure in the United States: Prince William Defeats American Leaders in Gallup Poll

The Americans may have seceded and cast off from England in 1776 to win their independence, but they still have a sweet nostalgia for the monarchy and a deep affection for the descendants of George III, the king who lost America. At each royal event in the United Kingdom, Americans are riveted in front of their small screen, not missing a crumb of the episodes of their favorite series… the Windsors!

As proof, in a poll released this week, the new Prince of Wales, William, was crowned “the favorite public figure in the United States”, as if the attacks of Harry and Meghan, installed in California from where they curry the eldest of King Charles III, had failed to damage his reputation in the United States.

Prince William, 41, even ranks above former US President Donald Trump and his successor Joe Biden, with experts saying the British prince’s charity work and staying out of politics support its popularity far beyond the borders of the kingdom.

Polling firm Gallup asked American voters what they thought of 15 big names on the world stage… and William came out on top. Gallup admits to having been “surprised” by this result, especially that a “British prince defeats the democratically elected and appointed leaders of the nation”.

Harry and Meghan in lack of popularity

In freefall in the polls, Prince Harry and his wife Meghan – who have dropped 48 and 40 points respectively since the release of the memoirs of the younger prince “The Substitute” – do not appear in the poll. However, in the current context of a world under tension, the Prince of Wales appears more popular than all the elected leaders known to Americans, in front of former President Donald Trump, the current tenant of the White House Joe Biden, or even Hero President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky. At the back of the pack is naturally Russian President Vladimir Putin.

With favorable opinions climbing to 59% of those polled, Prince William emerged as the strongest ‘candidate’, just ahead of the Ukrainian president at 57%, followed by Jill Biden, the US First Lady, and King Charles III. in fourth place with 46% favorable opinions, while Donald Trump occupies sixth place with a positive rating of 41%. Better, the Prince of Wales is of all the public figures mentioned, the one who has the lowest rate of unfavorable opinions – only 22% of Americans.

American affection for the royal family

This poll reveals the affection of Americans for the British royal family all the more since the other personalities known to Americans are, on the list, Kamala Harris, the American vice-president, Ron DeSantis, the governor of Florida and candidate for the presidential election of 2024 and Mike Pence, the former American vice-president or even the American attorney general, as well as the speaker of the House of Representatives.

This poll contrasts slightly with those carried out in the United Kingdom where it is the Princess of Wales, Kate, who is the most popular member of the Windsor tribe, even if the heir couple systematically beats the King and Queen, thanks in particular to the immense popularity of their children George, Charlotte and Louis…

According to Gallup polls editor Lydia Saad, “William’s image may be influenced by general American views of the British monarchy, but his much higher favorable rating than that of King Charles indicates that these ratings relate more to personalities than to positions”, emphasizing moreover that the two have the great advantage “of being outside the partisan fray, of not being associated with the Republican or Democratic parties” because of their arbitration position above parties.

We can also see the still vibrant aura of the late Princess Diana, whose prestige and affection she arouses reflects in America on her eldest son. Equally interesting, this poll shows how divided and polarized American society is today between Democrats and Republicans. “The United States may have to look beyond its borders to find public figures whose conduct the majority of Americans approve of,” explains one at Gallup, because “in our country it is difficult to find someone who Republicans and Democrats can agree on”.

From there to choose the Prince of Wales who finds favor in the eyes of Republicans and Democrats alike! Especially when we know, recalls Lydia Saad, that “the Americans fought a war of independence almost 250 years ago to escape the tyranny of the British crown”.
