An Arizona father is hailed as a hero after saving his 12-year-old daughter from being struck by lightning.
The girl was playing away from home with her father on October 15 in West Valley, Phoenix when she was struck by lightning right next to her, Valleywise Health surgeon Dr. Kevin Foster said in statements to FOX 10.
A 12-year-old girl from Arizona is expected to survive a lightning strike on Monday he will be discharged from the hospital.
After the partial impact, the girl’s heart stopped; however, her father managed to give her chest compressions to keep her alive.
“I think the key to saving her was that her father recognized that her heart had stopped, and he was able to perform effective CPR and get her heart working again, and that literally saved her life.” said Dr. Foster.
The doctor noted that the girl is currently recovering and is expected to be discharged this week.. It will only have a small superficial mark on the body, but it will eventually disappear.
Steve Jorgensen, who was able to save his daughter’s life, told FOX 10 that the child is currently “substantially unharmed” but acknowledged that what she experienced was “surprising”.
“I made his heart work again. I was able to breathe (for) a short time, so I lost it again. I panicked and started over; I made his heart beat a little faster, “added Jorgensen. “I’m just a father who takes care of his daughter.”
The girl’s heart stopped again, but Jorgensen managed to make her heart beat again, crediting his experience as a military veteran with medical training. “I fought in Iraq in 2007 and Afghanistan in 2008, so I have a lot of experience,” said Jorgensen.
The father said he and his daughter were playing in the rain when the storm struck last Saturday, moving through the West Valley just as lightning struck.
The girl was able to learn the story after regaining consciousness at the medical center thanks to her mother.
“Once we took the tubes out and her mother told her again, she just looked at her mother, hugged her and said, ‘I’m going to have a great story forever.'”Jorgensen pointed out.
