In the football world, you may encounter many curious moments, but the exclusion of a player before the initial kick-off of the match is really one of the extremes. Well, that’s exactly what happened a few days ago in the finals of the Super Cup in Paraguay.
The goalkeeper Jean Fernandes was the lucky one. Cerro Porteno finished off a quick charge from the left of the field by chipping the ball just past the home side’s keeper, making the score 1 – 1 26 minutes into the match. But then he turned towards the opponent’s fans and showed them a gesture that the referees did not like.
The VAR system came forward before the initial excavation. He finally came to a clear verdict after a discussion with the main referee of the match, Eber Aquino. Jean Fernandes saw the red card without a single move.
Portal The Sun states that goalkeeper Cerra Portena later commented on the whole incident on social networks, where he wrote: “When I went to put the rosary next to my stick, which is something I do before every duel, by the way, my opponent’s fans started throwing various things at me, including lighters.
I reacted by making a gesture towards them, which is considered completely normal in Brazil. I honestly don’t know what the referee thought, but in the end he gave me a red card. It was simply a misunderstanding. “
However, coach Cerra Portena was lucky. Given that the red card was seen by his goalkeeper before the start of the match, he could easily exchange it for a substitute goalkeeper. His team therefore played the entire final duel with a full number of eleven players on the field.
But even that was not enough in the end. The winner of the Paraguayan super cup was Club Olimpia, who defeated Cerro Porteno in the last match of the season 3: 1.
