The fastest expulsions for substitute players in the French League

Some substitute players in the French Football League broke negative records by receiving red cards a few seconds or minutes after entering the field.

Ghanaian star Andre Ayew came on as a substitute in the second half during his team’s match between Le Havre and Nantes, which ended in a goalless draw yesterday, Sunday, but less than 3 minutes later he was sent off for stepping on a Swiss man, Iray Commert, Nantes player.

After this quick expulsion, Andre joined the list of the fastest substitutes to receive a red card in the league since the 2006/07 season, according to the Opta website. In addition to Andre, the list included his brother Jordan Ayew and the Frenchmen Benjamin Mendy, Yohan Cabaye and Samuel Garndsir.

Andre’s expulsion is not the fastest for a substitute player in the French Championship, because Benjamin Mendy – currently the French player for Lorient – holds the record. In September 2015, a red card was shown in his face 47 seconds after he entered as a substitute to participate with his former team, Olympique de Marseille.

He is followed by Yohan Cabaye, who was eliminated by the referee just 52 seconds after entering the field to participate with his former team Lille in September 2009.

The list of the fastest red cards for substitutes includes the following names:

  • Benjamin Mendy (Olympique Marseille – September 2015): sent off after 47 seconds
  • Yohan Cabaye (Lille – September 2009): sent off after 52 seconds
  • Samuel Garendcier (Monaco – October 2018): sent off after 1 minute and 51 seconds
  • Jordan Ayew (Olympique Marseille – February 2013): sent off after 1 minute and 51 seconds.
  • Andre Ayew (Le Havre – November 2023): sent off after 2 minutes and 24 seconds
