The Fascinating History of Preston Road Station: Why It Had to Change Its Name

The extensive underground transport network in London is a true marvel. It has a wide range of stations ranging from terminals known for the enormous number of travelers who use them, such as Tottenham Court Road, Oxford Circus and Waterloo, to those stops with striking names that often pique travelers’ curiosity.

An example that stands out for its uniqueness is Elephant and Castle (Elephant and Castle). The name of this station, which could evoke links with Spain due to its origin in the term “La Infanta de Castilla,” is, to say the least, peculiar. Other unusual names worth mentioning are Cockfosters (Rooster breeders), Swiss Cottage (Swiss country house) and East Indiaa DLR station that is not far behind in terms of uniqueness.

However, this time around, we won’t be exploring flashy station names, but instead will focus on one in particular that had to undergo a change due to its unnecessary length. Preston Road, located on the Metropolitan line in northwest London, between Wembley Park and Northwick Park, has a fascinating history. This station, which opened in 1908, was originally conceived to serve the clay pigeon shooting area of the London Olympic Games of that same year.

Preston Road Halt Uxendon and Kenton… How was the name going to fit on the signs?

At its opening, the station was named Preston Road Halt for Uxendon and Kenton, a name so long that it did not fit on the typical London Underground station signs. Nevertheless, in 1931-32When the station was moved to the opposite side of the road, it was decided to rename it simply Preston Road, the name it retains today.
