Fans of the Karlovy Vary Film Festival and Jiří Bartoška were very relieved. The director of the Czech film event of the year appeared at the press conference. Even though he was thin, he was smiling, joking, and generally seemed to be in good spirits.
The actor and festival director has been undergoing cancer treatment again since last year. Fans were shocked at the weekend when the filming of the second part of The Tiger Theory was interrupted. The actor’s health complications are to blame for the interruption. „These are minor health complications. A few days ago everything was going well, but now it’s a little differentk,“ film director Radek Bajgar told Blesk on Friday.
Bartoška was even hospitalized for several days. However, he had already arrived at the Tuesday press conference at the festival. He was visibly emaciated, but he made jokes, was in good spirits, and generally appeared to be in good shape. He stayed in the luxury hotel for about an hour and a half, sparing no humor and apt remarks. „I’m a sick person, so I’m doing as well as I can. But otherwise I’m fine,“ he said to Lightning. But he didn’t want to talk about his health any further.

This year’s 58th edition of the International Film Festival in Karlovy Vary is very special for the acting bard. Just 30 years ago, he became director, with Eva Zaoralová (†89) standing by his side. „We set out to save the festival and no one had any idea that we would go this far. But I have the feeling that we are one of the few cultural organizations that has been operating for thirty years and is not falling apart,“ he confided proudly. But big celebrations are not planned. „We will celebrate it with a meeting with friends and an exhibition that will take place as part of the festival. We are not planning anything big for the celebration.”
