The famous French actor Alain Delon has died at the age of 88, his children told AFP on Sunday. One of the most popular actors in France, he was also – according to Le Monde – the last male star of French cinema with world fame.
Delon was born on November 8, 1935 in Sceaux, a suburb of Paris. He starred in films by Luchino Visconti (including “The Leopard”, 1963), Michelangelo Antonioni (the famous “Eclipse”, 1962), Joseph Losey (“Monsieur Klein”, 1976), Volker Schloendorff (“Swann’s Loves”, 1983) – the greatest directors of their era.
He played the leading roles in gangster films, comedies, melodramas and films that have made history in cinematography. He appeared in over 90 films in total. Delon’s specific style of acting was modelled on American acting. He was one of the greatest lovers of cinema. “His devilish angelic beauty and feline presence revolutionised cinema in the films of (Rene) Clement, (Jean-Pierre) Melville and Visconti,” writes “Le Figaro”.
Since the 1990s, he has rarely appeared on screen. “The directors I could have worked with are dead,” he told Le Monde in 2018. The media still focused on him. He was not just an actor but a personality, a beloved star and a loner. In recent years, he lived on his estate in the Loiret region in central France.
According to a statement from the actor’s three children, Delon “died peacefully at his home in Douchy, surrounded by his three children and family”. The press release was issued by Delon’s two sons: Anthony and Alain Fabien, and daughter Anouchka. In January this year, Delon was placed under legal protection in order to provide him with medical care. Earlier, in 2019, he suffered a stroke. In the last years of Delon’s life, his children were in a public dispute over the proper treatment of their father, and – according to the media – over the division of the star’s estate after his death.
