The first face transplant in Spain was performed in 2009 by the Dr. Pedro Cavadas and his team at the La Fe Hospital in Valencia. Pedro Cavadas has built a clinical career of international relevance thanks to his mastery in reconstructive surgery and advanced microsurgery. His career includes numerous recognitions and awards, which underline both his talent and his ethical and humanitarian commitment. Since graduating with honors in Medicine from the University of Valencia in 1989, Cavadas has been awarded the Extraordinary Bachelor’s Prize and the Second National Prize in Medicine in 1990, which marked a brilliant start to his training.

Upon completing his studies, he completed his residency at the La Fe Hospital in Valenciawhere he specialized in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in 1995. It was there where he began to focus his career on reconstructive microsurgery, becoming interested in the most complex cases. With a self-taught spirit and a determination to learn from the best, Cavadas spent several of his vacation periods in cutting-edge hospitals in the United States, such as San Francisco, Detroit and Dallas, observing the techniques of the most renowned surgeons of the time, according to the magazine Vanity Fair.

Throughout his career, Cavadas has received important awards, such as the FILACP International Resident Award in 1994 and the Award for Best Microsurgery Resident in the USA in 1995, in addition to having published more than 120 articles in international scientific journals, as explained on its website Cavada Clinics. His impact has transcended conventional medical practice with the creation of the Pedro Cavadas Foundation in 2003, through which it has carried out more than 11,000 altruistic interventions, mainly in Africa, in extreme conditions and without adequate resources, providing a chance at life to thousands of patients.

Dr. Cavadas has kept his personal life as discreet as possible. However, among the few family details known about this public personality is that he is the father of two daughters adopted in China, Ruolan and Xiaodan. On different occasions, he has reverberated his honor for them: “The best thing I have done and what I’m most proud of in my life,” he says.

Apparently, the eldest of the sisters has followed in her father’s footsteps and studies Medicine, while the youngest, a great football fan, has managed to get Cavadas, who hates this sport, to support Barça. “by legal imperative”as he himself mentioned in an interview with ABC. His fatherhood was a challenge at the beginning, but the doctor confesses that over time he learned to love his daughters deeply and today he cannot imagine his life without them.

On the other hand, regarding his love life, Dr. Cavadas has always chosen to maintain privacy. In 2021, he remarried with Naima in an intimate civil ceremony held in the Alfafar town hall, Valencia, attended by only six people. The wedding was officiated by the mayor Juan Ramón Adsuarawho shared the news days later on social networks, highlighting the honor of having married the famous surgeon.
