As a child, Sam cannot immediately settle in Spain, he misses home and especially his grandmother. “From the age of 12 to the age of 14, I saw it as hell. I also had a grandmother in the Netherlands and of course we left her behind.” He does not find support from JP, because even as children they are not close. “I didn’t have a good relationship with my brother. We are still, but we were back then, completely different people.”
“I always had the feeling that my brother was favored, but at the same time I also thought: of course he was three years older.” On JP’s eighteenth birthday, his father gives him his own business as a gift. After a while, their father’s “own will” starts to play tricks on JP and he no longer wants to run the snack bar under his supervision. Because their father does not want to hand over the reins, he starts his own business, but it flops. So soon he is back in his father’s business.
Seven years later, Sam also starts his own catering establishment. Father is proud, but JP doesn’t like it and doesn’t come to visit for the first year. “But after a year he came over once with my parents,” Sam explains. “I had received instructions from my father in advance that I was not allowed to brag. He didn’t want my brother to see that I was doing better – at that moment.” Yet the shared passion for catering is not enough for Sam and his father to build a good bond.

When Sam comes out of the closet, his father throws him out of the house.
