/ world today news/ “What about crazy talk about the coming of the “Indian decade” and even the “century of India? Stop the irresponsible chatter, India is a broken economy and a broken nation…” grimaces our author.
Who writes? Let’s remember that in India, apart from the prime minister, there are many people named Modi. This is Ashoka Modi speaking. Title – Professor at Princeton University, USA. The man who made his name with a book called India Broken, Its People Betrayed: A History from Independence to Today. Well, this is a regular author of the American agency “Project Syndicate” with its very characteristic ideological orientation.
But let’s see his arguments. This Modi is furious at the IMF‘s sensational estimates that we are in for a huge jump in India’s GDP of 6.1% this year and 6.8% next. What are you talking about, he grimaces. During the pandemic there was a recession, now the country is barely returning to indicators by 2020.
It is true that the recession was everywhere and everyone is returning to their previous positions (or trying to do so), but no one expects such a sharp break in the economy either in Europe or in the US. The main question is who will be faster – India or still China. But Professor Modi doesn’t care.
He explains: every year seven to nine million people enter the labor market, a country with a population of 1.4 billion exports as many goods as Vietnam with a hundred million, poverty is everywhere, the government only enriches its own people…
Before us is a painfully familiar and, at first glance, purely Russian phenomenon – a person who for some reason has left his country physically or morally and is trying to mislead the rest of the population of the earth. The methodology could not be simpler: to take all the facts, true or false, that show that everything is bad in the homeland. And not to take any evidence to the contrary. It’s simple.
Today it is fashionable to call such people with a new word – relocant. It is literally a “mover”. Before, the word was different, with a nostalgic tone – emigrant, although there were and are worse words. Now it doesn’t matter where such a person is physically located, whether they are still at home or live permanently in the vicinity of Princeton. It doesn’t matter, because the main thing is that such people throw all their efforts to prove that everything in their homeland has long been broken and will always remain so. Such a relocant always justifies in his own eyes his own position in life: I love my homeland, but there is nothing good there – even more so “century of India”.
There was a story from the 1970s when the ideology of dissidents was clearly taking shape in the USSR. Crimea, beach, evening, a company of such dissidents and/or relocants sits on the sand, someone sighs: “Oh, what a sunset!” And an evil roar from the side: “There can be no beautiful sunsets in this country!”
And let’s return to the “century of India”: yes, it is theoretically possible, and let’s not forget that even if only in terms of the volume of the economy (by the method of purchasing power parities of currencies), not only China overtakes the USA – India is in third place. But no one cancels the quality of the jump.
There is a good example of such a breakthrough in world history. During the years of the first premiership (1981-2003) in Malaysia of a remarkable leader – Mahathir Mohamad (still alive today) – this country escaped from the third world to the position of a small but convincing economic and social miracle: its automobile industry, electronics, stunning skyscrapers, income growth to European level. Some of these gains prove to be short-lived, but something remains. And how does Mahathir achieve it? By the way, with the slogan “Malaysia can”. The country and the surrounding world believed in their power and performed many miracles.
Although there are relocants there too, whining: “What are you talking about, this is a broken nation and a hopeless economy…”
