“The reading performance of fourth graders in Germany has fallen since 2016. A quarter of fourth graders in Germany do not reach the internationally established standard for reading competence, which is necessary for a successful transition from “learning to read” to “reading to learn”. Martin Habersaat, education policy spokesman for the SPD parliamentary group, says:
“Despite all the questionable results, the study also shows that successful education is possible even under difficult conditions! This is shown internationally in the IGLU study, as was shown by the Hamburg results of the last IQB education trend. It is important that the majority of pupils experience school as a positive place. We need to build on that.
It is important that we are committed to helping our little ones. The foundation for a successful educational career is laid in day-care centers and elementary schools. Or not. In twenty years, practically nothing has changed in terms of educational equity and equal opportunities in Germany – that is a miserable testimony for us as an educational policy as a whole. It is not enough to focus on a few perspective schools. It doesn’t help to flatter oneself that almost 15 percent of the teachers at primary schools in Schleswig-Holstein are not trained teachers. It was wrong to reject the SPD’s initiative to relieve the class teachers without alternative. We need more space for pedagogy!”
