“I wouldn’t thrive in today’s football,” he confides. “There’s so much money today that it’s no longer the same sport or the same state of mind. there were some in my time and I don’t mind mentioning the Saint-Étienne slush fund affair in the 1980s. I am thinking in particular of the big clubs where the price of football places becomes unattainable. We must not forget what we call “the little people.” This is what happened in England and also at PSG.”
And Rocheteau adds… “I like clubs like Saint-Étienne, Lens or Brest for the still accessible and popular side with affordable places. But these roots are disappearing in the professional football and that worries me. It’s not just PSG in Europe but it’s true that supporters are now seen as customers. When we should have more consideration for them. I’ve always loved one, player then manager, keeping in touch with the supporters. It’s a healthy relationship.
