The Fall and Fall of Yevgeny Prigozhin: Implications for the Wagner Group and Ukraine

On the night of June 24, 2023, the leader of the Wagner Group, Yevgeny Prigozhin, announced the uprising against the Russian military leadership, turning the shaven-headed billionaire from one of the most prominent men of Russian President Vladimir Putin into the greatest source of threat to him and his rule.

Exactly two months later, and on the same date, it was announced on the night of August 24, 2023, that Prigozhin had been killed, along with nine other people, most notably his deputy, Dmitry Utkin, in a private plane crash north of the capital, Moscow, according to what was announced by the Russian authorities and close to the “Wagner” commander.

This expected end for many raises many questions about the future of the Wagner Group after Prigozhin, and what are Putin’s messages from this “assassination” as some describe, and will this matter have any effects on the course of the battle in Ukraine?

New episode of the podcastkeeping upFrom Moscow, we host the academic and political researcher Mahmoud Al-Hamza.
