This glamorous and romantic outfit received a positive response from the audience.
Princess Diana Spencer became Princess Diana in 1981 after she married the heir to the British throne. Over the course of many subsequent years in this status, she tried to experiment with style, wearing jeans, evening mini-dresses and elegant fitted suits. But at the beginning of her journey, Diana collaborated mainly with only a few British designers, who exclusively created outfits for her in accordance with the fashion of the 80s.
One of them was the British brand Bellville Sassoon. She had about 70 looks from this brand, and she also collaborated quite closely with the brand on their creation, expressing her preferences.
At that period of her life, she was still very young and loved to wear clothes in a romantic style. Among the dresses that were hotly discussed was a dress made of thin, lightweight chiffon, which she wore on November 4, 1981 to the exhibition “The Splendor of Gonzaga”, which was held at the Victoria and Albert Museum. The outfit had dropped shoulders, a full skirt and a ruffled neckline decorated with bows.

The dress was also decorated with a pattern on the fabric in pastel shades in the form of leaves and a silver appliqué. At the waist it was complemented by a blue ribbon belt. She completed the look with a pearl choker, a bracelet and diamond earrings, and was holding a clutch in her hand.

The outfit was called the “fairy-tale princess dress” because of its style and the positive response of her subjects, who were fascinated by the Welsh in it.
“We called it the ‘fairy-tale princess dress’ because we received so many letters about it, especially from children who thought this was what a fairy-tale princess should look like. Diana loved the dress – it suited her sense of romance,” David said of it. Sassoon, designer of the Bellville Sassoon brand.

But besides the impression that the dress made, there was another reason for discussion about it – Diana fell asleep in it. The shot of the princess with her head down at an event and her eyes closed is one of her most famous photographs.

But don’t think that Diana was bored at the event, because in fact the cause of fatigue was pregnancy. The day after her glamorous appearance, on November 5, 1981, Buckingham Palace officially announced that Princess Diana and then-Prince Charles were expecting their first child. She was probably two months pregnant.
