The Failure of Oil and Gas Exploration in Lebanon’s Block 9: Reports and Controversies Surrounding Total Energy’s Drilling

In recent hours, there have been reports of the failure of oil and gas exploration efforts in Lebanon in Block 9, near the border with Israel.

Lebanese media reported that the French company Total Energy informed the Ministry of Energy and the Petroleum Sector Administration of the completion of drilling in the Qana field in Block No. 9 after it reached a depth of 3,900 meters below the seabed and found nothing but water, according to LBC Lebanon.

For his part, Caretaker Minister of Energy and Water Walid Fayyad denied, in press statements, the circulating news about the failure of oil and gas exploration efforts in Lebanon.

He said that the news circulating that no gas reservoir was discovered in Block No. 9 is incorrect, and we are awaiting the results of the tests.

Gas in Lebanon

Parliamentarian Michel Daher said in a statement on social media: “Unfortunately, my information about the non-availability of gas in Block 9 in commercial quantities was correct, awaiting high-level political permits that are far from the truth, considering that the reason is an international conspiracy against Lebanon.”

Data circulated in the Lebanese media indicate that the French company Total stopped the process of exploring for oil and gas in Lebanon in Block No. 9 after it became clear that there were no commercial quantities in the Qana field.

Energy Minister Walid Fayyad stressed that “everyone is rushing to conclusions, and they are wrong conclusions,” stressing that “the company completed drilling to the target depth, even though they reached it sooner than expected.”

He added: “Currently, they are collecting data at different depths to better understand the content, including confirming the existence of the reservoir (or not) and indicating whether it could have a commercial size (or not).”

He stressed that there is no conclusion yet, and it will take a week or two to obtain the required data,” An-Nahar newspaper reported.

Big deception

Lebanese economist Ziad Nasser Al-Din wrote on the “X” platform that Lebanon “is exposed to a major deception in Block 9, as the American company Halliburton, a contractor for Total, has stopped drilling at a depth of 3,900 meters, contrary to the agreement that stipulates that drilling should be at a depth of 4,400 meters.” meters, and the arguments you invoke do not convince anyone.”

He said, “Using Lebanese gas as a means of pressure to save the Israeli enemy is prohibited, and Total is concerned with clarification and not participating in the conspiracy, especially since the region is on the brink of war and Lebanon is not concerned with stopping work in the Karish field.”

Sources confirmed that if it is confirmed that the point where Total chose to drill does not contain gas; This does not mean that the gas is not present, but rather it is at another point in the field. However, this will require a decision by Total to re-drill the same square in other places.

The sources pointed out that the seismic surveys that Total had previously conducted before starting drilling showed the possibility that we might have gas, according to Al-Jumhuriya newspaper.

Only one well

The contract with Total stipulates the drilling of one well, which the French company has committed to doing, but what will it decide after that? It is not possible to predict from now, especially since the platform will begin dismantling the equipment in the coming weeks. By the end of this month, it will head to Cyprus to begin excavation work there.

The French company Total Energy leads the consortium responsible for exploring for oil and gas in Lebanon, in Concession Area No. 9 in territorial waters.

The company had announced, last May, that it had signed, with its partners, Eni of Italy and Qatar Energy, a fixed contract with “Transocean” to use the drilling platform, after Lebanon and Israel concluded, in October 2022, an agreement described as “historic” to demarcate the borders. The Navy after arduous negotiations with American mediation.

The Transocean Barents drilling rig began exploration at the end of August, and initial results are scheduled to be issued at the end of this month or in November.
