Failing at the movies is one thing. But fail online too?
The audience’s gluttony of comic book movies often results in many of them being skipped by fans and waiting for streaming services. This could also explain the failure of Flash, which after lukewarm reviews (we weren’t thrilled either) quietly passed the theaters with a miserable global revenue of 268 million dollars and an estimated loss of up to a hundred million.
From the glaringly red numbers, Flash could at least partially get a second life in the online world, where he would earn something from digital rentals and increase the attractiveness of the home streaming service, which in his case is HBO Max. But it didn’t happen. Magazine Deadline reported that only 1.1 million American households played it in the two days after its release, an 8% drop from the previous DC comic Black Adam, which was also considered a flop.

The film with the controversial Ezra Miller in the lead role thus became another nail in the coffin of the aging DCEU, although it still grossed significantly more than the latest Blue Beetle with a tragic global total of $84 million. However, its production cost half as much compared to Flash, and the marketing campaign, which focused mainly on the Latin American community, from which the main character of the film comes, was also far more economical.
The last film of the DCEU is supposed to be the second Aquaman, with a premiere planned for December 20, 2023. But the studio allegedly does not know how to deal with it, and we haven’t even seen a trailer yet. Heads of Warner Bros. so this year they can at least warm up their great Barbie campaign. The next Warner comic book will be a two-part stand-alone and more author-oriented Joker with Joaquin Phoenix and, now, also with Lady Gaga – not until October 2024.
