The power station in Vogtle was to be the first of several dozen new power stations. But that nuclear revival ultimately failed to materialize due to concerns about the safety of nuclear power plants after the Fukushima disaster and huge bills.
The two reactors at Vogtle were budgeted at $14 billion, but the bill eventually rose to $30 billion. These high costs are partly at the basis of the bankruptcy of engineering firm Westinghouse in 2017.
Due to the many delays and the cost, analysts consider it unlikely that new conventional nuclear reactors will be built any time soon. The future now seems to be reserved for small reactors of the new generation, the so-called small modular reactors (SMR).
