Television announcer photos Malaysia wearing a patch over one of his eyes is milling about on social media. The one-eyed action was claimed as solidarity for a Palestinian who was shot by Israeli soldiers.
In the circulating narrative, it is stated that the shooting took place in 2021, a time of friction between Palestine and Israel strengthened again this May. What are the facts?
According to the news agency AFP, Friday (28/5/2021), the claim is misleading. The image shows support for reporters Palestine who were injured in 2019, not 2021.

Malaysian state-owned TV channel name, Alhijrah TV can be seen at the top of the image.
Real Facts
An online search found the photo had appeared in an article published by Alhijrah TV on November 21, 2019.
The first paragraph of the article in English Malaysia it reads: “News reader Adi Akmal Sehrom reads the last segment of the news program at 20.00 on AlHijrah TV last night with a bandage over his left eye as a symbol of solidarity with the Palestinian photographer who was blinded in his left eye as a result of being shot by the Zionist army while on duty last Friday.”
AFP reported that journalists Palestine, Muath Amarneh, was shot in the eye on November 15, 2019, during clashes between Israeli border police and Palestinian protesters in Surif village, near Hebron, in the West Bank.
In the viral post, most of the pictures are from Alhijrah TV, but the image in the middle shows a broadcast by Palestinian TV in 2019. The image from the broadcast was also uploaded by Palestinian journalist Yousef Alhelou on November 17, 2019.
