Chris Redd says his attacker outside the New York Comedy Cellar “splashed blood on his face” last week.
The comedian, whose HBO special Max Because I’m this way? released Thursday, detailing his first experience on a new episode of The everyday beastin the last laugh podcast. In a clip from the next episode, due out Tuesday, Redd refutes elements of the NYPD report – most notably that he made it to the auto club – and reveals that his attacker did more than beat him up.
After sharing that “I went there like any New Yorker,” he also denies speculation that his injuries were the result of a robbery attempt.
“This man hit me in the face with something metallic,” Redd explained. “I thought they were brass knuckles because they cut my nose to the bone.”
Redd explained that as a boxer he was used to being beaten and therefore did not find the situation “terrifying” but was surprised. “The boy just hit me and ran away,” he said. “I fell so fast. I didn’t even know I fell until I looked at it [surveillance] Coal.”
Later, Redd found that “blood was pouring out of his face”, so he decided not to chase his attacker, a move that would have led to him “chasing him down the street with blood dripping from my face”.
The comedian noted that he is confident that it was more than just a fisted fist and that he was hit by “something” since “one punch usually doesn’t do everything at once.”
Redd said he tried to enter the club, where he left blood on the stairs leading up to the club, but ended up being treated at Bellevue Hospital. There they faced a fracture on her cheek and two more on her nose.
“If we could have stopped the bleeding, I would have taken the stage,” he said. “I thought I was looking forward to talking about this shit. And I’m glad I waited, but that was my first thought.”
In an Instagram post on Sunday, the comedian said he was “recovering quickly” after the attack. “I’m resting like crazy, but I want to say thank you thank you thank you for all the love messages, the jokes and the care!”
