The English Football Federation issued a statement in the early hours of Monday in which condemned the racist insults on the internet against some players after the defeat of the national team in the penalty shoot-out against Italy in the final of the Eurocup. Boris Johnson, British Prime Minister, also charged against fans who uttered racist insults and praised the players of Southgate.
The teams drew 1-1 after extra time and Italy won the penalty shootout 3-2, in which the English players Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka, all of them black, missed the throws.
Boris Johnson tweeted today that those responsible of the racist comments should be “ashamed” and added that players should be treated as “heroes” and not insulted.
The head of the Government commented on his Twitter account that last night’s result was “heartbreaking” but that the English coach, Gareth Southgate, and the team played like heroes.
“They have brought pride to the country and deserve great credit” for it, added the conservative leader.
The English Federation, for its part, also criticized and condemned the racist insults against some players. “The FA strongly condemns all forms of discrimination and is appalled at the online racism that has targeted some of our England players on social media,” the statement said. “We could not be clearer in saying that anyone behind such disgusting behavior he is not welcome when it comes to following the team. We will do everything we can to support affected players while urging punishments to be applied toughest possible to any person in charge ”.
The English team also issued a statement in which he condemned the insults directed at his players on social networks. “We are disgusted by the fact that some of our players, who have given their all for the jersey this summer, have been subjected to discriminatory insults on the internet after tonight’s game,” the team tweeted.
British police confirmed in recent hours that they would investigate the messages. “We are aware of a series of offensive and racist comments on social networks directed at footballers after the final of # Euro2020,” the Metropolitan Police tweeted.
“This behavior is totally unacceptable, it will not be tolerated and it will be investigated.”
London Mayor Sadiq Khan asked businesses of social networks that remove that content from their platforms. “Those responsible for the disgusting internet attacks we have seen must be held accountable, and social media companies must act immediately to eliminate and prevent this hatred,” Khan said.
