Optika.id – The extinction of the dinosaurs which occurred about 66 million years ago became one of the most dramatic events in the history of life on Earth. A number of studies have shown that an asteroid collision with Earth was the main cause of the extinction of these dinosaurs, Friday (30/6/2023).
In Earth’s history, the extinction of the dinosaurs is an event that is difficult for reason to accept. For tens of millions of years, dinosaurs lived on land and in the sea. However, at the end of the Cretaceous period, they suddenly disappeared. The theory most accepted by scientists is that an asteroid collision with Earth caused the extinction.
Various scientific evidence supports that it was the asteroids that caused the extinction of the dinosaurs, including the discovery of the Chicxulub crater on the Yucatan peninsula, Mexico, which is thought to be the former impact of a large asteroid. Other evidence, such as rock layers and deposits containing rare elements such as iridium, patterns of global distribution of excess material associated with asteroid impacts, and the fossil record show drastic changes in populations of organisms at that time.
The collision causes a massive explosion that releases the energy equivalent of tens of millions of nuclear bombs. As a result, dust, smoke and small particles are thrown into the atmosphere which causes the sun to be closed so that the earth experiences darkness and a decrease in global temperature. This condition certainly disrupted the food chain and resulted in mass extinctions, including the dominant dinosaurs at that time.
Drastic climate change and loss of biodiversity affect ecosystems as a whole. The absence of dinosaurs paved the way for mammals and other types of living things to thrive and fill the void left behind.
The asteroid collision with Earth was a major factor in the extinction of the dinosaurs. By learning and uncovering more about the role of asteroids in the dinosaur apocalypse, we can gain valuable insights into sustainability and change in our planet’s ecosystems.
