CCTV reported that a missile launch vehicle of the People’s Liberation Army has recently been upgraded to be able to completely hide the missile in the cabin. The report did not specify the missile model, but said that the missile made its debut during the National Day parade in 2019 and is in line with the Dongfeng-17 hypersonic missile.

At the National Day parade the year before last, the Dongfeng-17 missile was exposed on the launch vehicle. The blue-green missile and the camouflage body were clearly recognizable. The missile body was also painted with the words “DF-17” in white paint.

Some mainland media speculated that the recent exposure of the masked launch vehicle may be the complete form of the Dongfeng-17 weapon system. Military experts believe that the complete concealment of missiles can help prevent enemy satellites or unmanned aerial vehicles from discovering and identifying them, and protect the missiles from severe external weather or the complex environment of the battlefield, thereby improving survivability.

Hypersonic missiles can fly at more than 5 times the speed of sound, and existing anti-missile systems cannot intercept them. The Dongfeng-17 has an estimated range of 1,800 to 2,500 kilometers. This missile was reported to have been deployed to frontline troops along the southeast coast in October last year to deal with the tension in the Taiwan Strait.
