In the accident in Diessen, where on New Year’s Eve one fell dead, a large barrel of carbide exploded. The 200-litre drum exploded before the victim tried to ignite the carbide, a police spokesman said. Brabant broadcasting.
On Saturday afternoon, forty people, mostly young men, were shooting carbide in a meadow in the village southeast of Tilburg when things went awry. The victim, a 23-year-old man from Diessen, died in hospital.
The police assume an accident. No criminal offenses were committed, the spokesman said. Therefore, no further searches are performed.
Carbide shooting traditionally takes place on New Year’s Eve, especially in the north, east and south of the country. The carbide (calcium carbide) is placed in a drum or container and wetted. This creates an explosive gas, ethine, which when ignited, blows off the lid of the joint or can and causes a loud bang.
