Another danger is that batteries, especially refurbished ones, can take hours to recharge. Users cannot monitor the entire process and can leave them logged in overnight. Some restaurants may store e-bikes on-site, but independent Door Dash or Uber Eats couriers have no choice but to pack them into dense apartments.

A new proposal will seek to ban used power supplies altogether, while another would require stricter national testing standards for batteries. The New York City Housing Authority attempted to ban electric bicycles and batteries from thousands of buildings earlier this year. However, it failed after intense resistance from delivery workers and officials.

Earlier this month, New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced a $ 1 million program to provide independent consignee hubs, which includes charging stations. However, it is unclear whether they will allow overnight charging.
