New York’s skies glowed a mysterious blue on Thursday night, after the explosion of an electrical transformer at a facility of energy company Con Edison in the District of Queens.
The 114th District of the New York Police Department said in a tweet “it is investigating a transformer explosion at the Astoria East & North Queens Con Ed power station.”
No one was injured, according to a tweet from Mayor Bill De Blasio, who also said the Con Edison company “is now assessing outages.” There were train delays on line 7, although the MTA (equivalent to the RATP in New York) was supplied.
Meanwhile, of travelers also tweeted about a power outage at LaGuardia Airport. Electricity at the airport was largely restored around 10:30 p.m., port authority representative Scott Ladd told INSIDER in an email Thursday evening. Scott Ladd said flight schedules at LaGuardia could be affected by the outage.
“Arriving flights may land, but some departures are delayed. Travelers are urged to check with their carrier for the latest information on flight status,” he said.
Con Edison acknowledged the incident on his Twitter account, confirming that there was “a brief electrical fire in our Astoria annex, which involves electrical transformers and has caused a decrease in transmission in the region”.
“We are currently investigating the cause of the incident,” the agency said.
A few minutes later, Terence Monahan, the head of the New York Police Department, said the incident was under control and that no injuries had been reported.
