Former Leeds United forward Noel Whelan attacked Christian Eriksen and warned Tottenham not to sign the midfielder again.
EriksenThe 28-year-old spent six and a half seasons with Spurs before leaving for Inter Milan in January 2020. He left under a cloud after making it clear six months before his departure that he wanted ‘a new challenge’.
The Danish international was linked to Real Madrid but nothing materialized and he finally made his way to the San Siro. Having been a Spurs stalwart since 2013, the manner of his departure still bothers many.
He seemed to ‘put down tools’ during the last months of his stay in North London. Having been a regular starter for so many years, he was used from the bench in half of his appearances.
Eriksen joined the Nerazzurri for a fee of around £ 16.9 million and signed a contract until 2024. But things have not gone according to plan in Italy and reports say he wants to return to Tottenham.
Whelan admitted that he was not impressed with the playmaker’s performance in the last few months leading up to his departure. exist some obstacles upon his return and made his feelings on the subject clear.
“We just have to look at the cloud he left behind and the way he played and what he gave Tottenham during his time there, which was nothing,” Whelan Football Insider.
“He played 60 percent, because he didn’t want to get injured, he wasn’t the same player, he wanted to leave the football club, he was a great server and a fantastic player, but you have to look at the way he acted before leaving« .
Foxes on the hunt
Spurs are not the only club interested, as Leicester City have also been mentioned as potential suitors. However, coach Brendan Rodgers said this week that don’t break the bank to sign anyone in January.
There are also potential issues over the terms of any deal. Inter are believed to favor permanent change as the Premier League duo seek a loan.
There is no question of Eriksen’s creative ability, but Whelan took no punches in his assessment of the situation.
“I would not touch it with a barge, no matter how good it is,” he added. “I think that when you go and show your character and the person you are, it is a lack of respect for the club and the players you are playing with.”
