Quebec has called on the private health sector in recent years in order to unclog waiting lists, but a study has revealed that this decision was very expensive.
The Institute for Socio-economic Research and Information draws a harsh portrait of the pilot project launched by Gaétan Barrette to compare the costs of five types of surgery between the public and private networks.
In 2019-2020, carpal tunnel surgery cost an average of $908 in the private sector compared to $495 in the public. A short colonoscopy cost $739 versus $290.
Whether private or public, the surgeon earned the same amount from the RAMQ.
“It is certain that if we remove the costs of equipment and the operating room from the public and include them in the private sector, it will not paint the same picture. What IRIS does to us is that it compares apples and oranges,” says Renaud Brossard, director of communications at the Montreal Economic Institute.
