The Existence of the Prophet’s People in Baitul Maqdis: Exploring Hadith and History

Jakarta – The Prophet SAW once told about a group of his people who could overcome and defeat the enemy until the Day of Resurrection. They are said to be in Baitul Maqdis and its surroundings.

The existence of the people of the Prophet SAW is explained through a hadith narrated from Abi Umamah from the Messenger SAW. This hadith is found in the book An Nihayah Fitan wa Ahwal Akhir az Zaman (Mukhtashar Nihayah al Bidayah) by Ibnu Katsir translated by Anshori Umar Sitangan and Imron Hasan.

The Prophet SAW said,

A group of my nation will continue to adhere to the truth, defeating their enemy, subjugating them. Those who oppose them will not harm them, except what afflictions have befallen them, until the command of God comes to them. They also said, “O Messenger of God, where are they?” He said, “House of the Holy Place and the surroundings of the House of Holy Place.”

Meaning: “There will still be a group of my people who can overcome and defeat their enemies. They are not disturbed by anyone who does not agree with them nor the hardships they experience until the coming of God’s command (Doomsday). Meanwhile they remain in such a state. The companions asked, ‘O Messenger of God, where are they?’ He replied, ‘In Jerusalem and around Jerusalem’.”

There is no interpretation from Ibn Kathir regarding the meaning of this hadith. However, he stated that the hadith was an example of a strange incident that the Prophet Muhammad had told about.

Baitul Maqdis or called Al-Quds City is the area currently known as Jerusalem. The conquest of Baitul Maqdis by Muslims occurred during the era of Caliph Umar bin Khattab RA.

Told in Tartib wa Tahdzib Al-Kitab Bidayah wa Nihayah Ibnu Katsir’s work translated by Muhammad Ahsan bin Usman, according to internal narration Tarikh ar-Rusul, Caliph Umar RA left for Baitul Maqdis from Jabiyah on 15 H, riding his sick horse. However, the horse was able to run fast and wild.

There is another opinion that says the conquest of Baitul Maqdis happened in 16 H. As Muhammad bin Azis said, from Muslim, from ‘Uthman bin Hisn bin Allaq. Yaqub bin Sufyan said, “The conquest of Jabiyah and Baitul Maqdis happened in the year 16 AH.”

Baitul Maqdis is where the Al Aqsa Mosque stands. It is mentioned in a number of tafsir books, such as the tafsir of Ath-Thabari, Ibn Kathir, Al-Qurthubi, and others, that the figures who first built the Al Aqsa Mosque were angels. They are called lines and determine their place.

However, according to Jumhur’s opinion and considered the most authentic, the first person to build the Al Aqsa Mosque was Prophet Adam AS. However, there is no history that explains the shape of the building and the construction process.

After that, Prophet Ibrahim AS is said to have renovated the building of Prophet Adam AS. The arrival of Prophet Ibrahim AS received a warm welcome from the ruler of Baitul Maqdis at that time who was known to be pious.

The renovation of the Al Aqsa Mosque continued until the arrival of the following prophets. Like Prophet Yaqub AS, then continued by Prophet Sulaiman AS and continued until the era of the Islamic caliphs.

God bless you.
