A new research, published in the scientific journal ‘Journal of Physiology’, shows that only a 60-minute session of exercise changed the clocks of the muscles of the mice around an hour in any direction.
As shown scientists from the University of Florida (united States), the clocks of the muscles of the mice “heard” the information of muscle contractions during exercise. If this research is replicated in humans, there is justification exercise prescription for workers on night shifts and the treatment of diseases such as heart disease, which can cause alterations in the watches of the whole body.

Clocks exist in virtually all our cells to coordinate temporally the specific functions of the cells. The settings of our watches is sensitive to signals as the light changes throughout the day, the hour of eating… and exercise.
This means that the exercise is a signal to adjust the clocks of the muscles. The researchers determined this by studying mice that were in different phases of the day: in the middle of their resting period, one hour before the start of its active phase, and in the middle of its active phase. The active stages and the rest of the mice are equivalent to the day and the night in humans.
Demonstrated in mice
Then they observed how the amount of a protein primary clock changed in the course of several days after the muscle contractions. Their results showed that, depending on the timing of the contractions, the clocks were advanced or delayed an hour more early or more late and that this does not require hormones circulating or clock central.
In other words, the time of exercise during the day can rewind or fast forward our clocks, body muscle, thereby fine-tuning this could allow a precise treatment of the diseases in which the clocks body or well ahead or well behind.

The researchers conducted this research on mice instead of humans, because would require multiple muscle biopsies, which are invasive procedures. Although this research has been conducted until now in mice, can be carried out in patients without the need for clinical trials, since it requires a prescription time of exercise for certain conditions, such as heart disease.
“This research is really important because highlights the effect that exercise can have in the clocks of our body,” explains to SciTechDaily Christopher Wolff, one of the authors of the study, and belonging to the Department of Physiology and Functional Genomics, University of Florida. “If this is replicated in humans, it means that the night shift workers they can use exercise to help change the clocks of their bodies. We may also use the exercise as a treatment for ‘disorders of the body clock’ that can occur in many chronic diseases, like heart”.
