Roger Federer, ninth seed and former world number one, was crowned champion this Sunday of the Indian Wells Masters 1000, by beating his friend Stan Wawrinka, third seed, in a 100% Swiss final, in two sets of 6-4, 7 -5.
Federer reached his fifth title in the Californian desert, the first Masters of the year on the ATP circuit.
For Wawrinka this was the first final, which he agreed to by eliminating Spanish Pablo Carreño Buste in the semifinals, while the ‘Swiss Express’ did it on the local Jack Sock.
“The fairy tale continues, I hope my body allows me to play a long time at this level,” said Federer at the end of the game.
Previously, Wawrinka had survived a close encounter against rising Austrian talent Dominic Thiem in the quarterfinals.
For his part, Federer had eliminated his old friend, Rafael Nadal, in the week in a repeat of the epic victory over the Spaniard in the final of this year’s Australian Open, the first Grand Slam of the season.
Federer, who won his 18th Grand Slam title in Australia in January, joined Serbian Novak Djokovic as the only five trophies at Indian Wells, adding Sunday’s to those he captured in 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2012.
Thanks to this title, Federer will move from the tenth to the sixth position in the ATP ranking.
Their progress could continue from Tuesday in Miami, the second Masters 1000 of the year, in which Scotsman Andy Murray and defending champion Djokovic, number one and two in the world rankings, will not compete due to injuries.
