The Union of Entrepreneurs and Employers (ZPP) wants to raise excise duties on vodka. Obtained this way money could finance an increase in the tax-free amount.

Cezary Kaźmierczak: The excise tax on vodka should increase by 40 percent.

– In the last 20 years, excise tax on beer increased by approx. 40%, and vodka taxation remained unchanged – told Newseria Biznes Cezary Kaźmierczak, president of the Union of Entrepreneurs and Employers. – Vodka is ridiculously cheap in Poland. Half right now liters can be bought for about PLN 20 and is starting to be the favorite drink of teenagers, which is also socially dangerous – he added.

The president of ZPP believes that higher excise duty on alcohol would provide the state with funds to increase the tax-free amount to PLN 30,000. – One of our postulates is to equate this excise duty on vodka to the level of (…) about 40 percent, which should provide PLN 3 billion of additional revenues to budetu states – said Cezary Kaźmierczak.

The excise tax on strong alcohols in other EU countries is higher than on beer

Excise duty is the second largest source of income for the state budget. Tax this year provides 70-75 billion zlotys of revenues. Experts note that excise duty is also one of the tools for shaping the state’s health policy. Lower taxation of low-percentage alcoholic beverages and higher taxation of spirits are intended to reduce the social harm caused by irresponsible consumption. They note that in other European Union countries the excise duty on strong alcoholic drinks is much higher than on beer.
