The exception and the rule: Brecht revives on stage thanks to Impulso Teatro

Impulso Teatro will present several works from the repertoire throughout the month of September at the Adolfo Llauradó Hall. Tickets can be purchased at the theater box office from 3:00 pm each day of the performance.

This weekend the Adolfo Llauradó Room presents The exception and the rule by the Impulso Teatro collective. The performances will be at 5:00 pm (all three days) on this stage in the capital’s Vedado.

The exception and the ruleone of the last didactic pieces by the German playwright, belongs to the Trilogy of works by Bertolt Brecht directed by the renowned actor and director Alexis Díaz de Villegas.

Impulso Teatro’s production remains faithful to the author’s message, discussing universal themes such as abuse of power, exploitation and injustice, while inviting reflection on the oppressor-oppressed dynamics.

The play, originally written in 1930, remains relevant today, and the theatre collective presents it with an approach that seeks to expose the tensions of contemporary society.

The cast is made up of experienced figures such as the National Theatre Award winner Carlos Pérez Peña and other younger actors and actresses such as Edel González Govea, Sergio Gutiérrez, Eudys Espinosa, Dila Martínez and Rosalí Suen. The live music on stage is another of the attractions of this production, which includes rhythms and songs that reinforce the messages of the plot.

With this work, Impulso Teatro reaffirms its commitment to theatre with social and political content, remaining faithful to Brechtian aesthetics, which seek to directly challenge the spectator. The direction of Díaz de Villegas and the continuation of Linda Soriano, opt for an approach that, without resorting to visual artifices or exuberant sets, manages to transmit Brecht’s powerful message about abuse as a historical norm.

A timely proposal to enjoy this piece of universal theatre, recreated with the strength and authenticity of one of the theatrical collectives of the contemporary Cuban scene.
