The ex-journalists of Science et Vie will launch a monthly

In collaboration with the Unique Heritage Media group, around fifteen journalists from Science et Vie, including the nine who resigned this year, are preparing to create Epsiloon at the end of June, a competing magazine for the popularization of science.

Recently left the magazine Science and Life to preserve their editorial independence, around ten journalists will launch a new scientific monthly at the end of June, Epsiloon, in collaboration with the group specializing in the youth press, Unique Heritage Media (UHM), they announced Monday, May 10, 2021.

At the end of March, nine journalists working for Science and Life, of which almost all of the incumbent editors, had formalized their resignation. In question, disagreements with the sulphurous group Reworld Media, owner of the title since the summer of 2019, concerning in particular the management of the website by non-journalist content managers. All have decided to embark on the adventure Epsiloon alongside Hervé Poirier, former managing editor of Science and Life left last fall after 21 years in the house, and Mathilde Fontez, the former deputy editor-in-chief who followed him in January. In total, about fifteen journalists – all of whom have worked with the century-old magazine – including eight permanent staff, are participating, this tandem explained to AFP.

Sold for 4.90 euros, the first issue will be printed in 100,000 copies, told AFP Emmanuel Mounier, president of UHM (Le Journal de Mickey, National Geographic Kids…), polytechnician and avid reader of Science and Life “since the age of 10».

Astronomy, climate, technology, archeology … Their new publication will explore “The world at all scales, from the infinitely small to the infinitely large, from the most elementary to the most complex phenomenon, from the deepest subject to the lightest”, promises a press release.

Hence its name, a reference to the Greek letter which, in mathematics, “Designates the little one” and “The immensely large”, with a double O, orthographic innovation allowing a logo in the form of the symbol which represents infinity.

With its model “More refined” who delivers “Stories in the foreground”, Espiloon wants to be “more modern” and “dynamic” that the “Venerable” Science and Life, according to Mathilde Fontez.

Crowdfunding

A pre-subscription campaign is also launched from Monday until June 10 on the crowdfunding platform Ulule, with a stated objective of 1,500 subscribers, 25,000 being necessary for the profitability of the title for which UHM is investing. «

This launch is supported by a slew of personalities who were moved by the situation in Science and Life, from astrophysicist Françoise Combes to mathematician Cédric Villani, including designer Philippe Starck and actor Thierry Lhermitte.
