Background

In this advanced era, the development of Information and Communication Technology has a big role in all developments and innovations that occur in various fields in the world, one of which is the field of film. The film sector, especially the film industry, has experienced many significant changes in terms of production, distribution and consumption processes. In the past around the 1800s, films were produced analogue which still used film cameras and limited technology. It should also be remembered that film cameras at that time were very large.

In film distribution, previously the production format was still in physical form such as film tape. Not only that, the process that goes through to become a film is very long because the format is film tape so the editing process has to be done manually to create the desired sequence. Marketing films in ancient times was not as effective and efficient as it is now. In the past, the film industry had to make promotions such as posters, pamphlets, etc. which are then distributed and posted in cinemas, public places and other strategic places. So the budget required from the production stage to the launch stage is very large.

However, after the development of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), there has been a major revolution and transformation in the film field thanks to sophisticated technologies. From what was originally an analog era, it has now become a digital era. Many media have been compressed and also converged, starting from cameras which now have digital formats, editing processes using software, and digital formats making the film distribution process easier so that they can be accessed by audiences online as well as reducing costs for the film industry.

Despite the many advantages and great benefits of the development of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), challenges also arise. The existence of innovations in online film distribution, such as streaming, has made digital security and piracy an issue that must be addressed by the film industry. There are quite a few cases where illegal distribution occurs by the audience to seek profit. Therefore, copyright protection and regulations are in place to prevent continued illegal distribution.

History of the Development of World Film

The development of film in the world has had an interesting evolution from technological experimentation to a global form of art and entertainment. The film production process in the past was not as easy as it is now with the help of many sophisticated technologies. In the beginning, there were experiments with moving images carried out by photography pioneer Eadweard Muybridge in 1878 who recorded a series of moving images of horses. However, the invention of two brothers from France, Auguste and Louis Lumire, namely the cinematograph in 1895 is considered a historical milestone that introduced film to the world. His invention of the cinematograph was a device capable of recording and playing back moving images.

Thanks to the discovery of the cinematrograph, two brothers Auguste and Louis Lumire made the world’s first film entitled “Sortie del’usine Lumira de Lyon” (Workers Leave the Lumiere Factory) which only lasted about 45 seconds. The content of this film is also very simple, namely the scene of the workers at the Lumire Factory leaving the factory together because it is time to go home. Then on December 28, 1895, they had their first public screening at the Indien Salon, Grand Café, Paris. At this screening, the audience witnessed moving images directly for the first time and was also recorded as the first film in the world. After the first film, they then made another film entitled “L’Arrive d’un Train en Gare de La Ciotat” (The Arrival of the Train at La Ciotat Station) which then from these two pioneers the film developed to what it is today which uses various advanced technologies.

History of Film Development in Indonesia

From the findings of two brothers, Auguste and Louis Lumire, cinematographs, the silent film era emerged. The silent era in film history refers to the period in which films were not equipped with sound starting from around the 1890s to the 1930s. The history of film development in Indonesia also started from the silent film era around the 1920s to 1930s. The beginning of the silent film era in Indonesia began in 1926 where the film “Loetoeng Kasaroeng” was produced. The film is an adaptation of the famous ludruk play, a form of traditional Javanese folk theater. With its short duration, this film became an experiment that created the foundation or basis for the development of cinema in Indonesia. At that time, there was no established film industry, and film production was still limited.
