The Evolution of Brass Bands in Latvian Song Festival Tradition

Playing music in brass bands, along with choral singing, is an integral part of the Latvian Song Festival tradition. The XXVII General Latvian Song and XVII Dance Festival takes place in the 150th year of the festival tradition, therefore the brass band concert is designed as a path from the beginnings of the brass band tradition to a modern sound. This is also evidenced by the message in the title of the concert (“Time passes”) – first of all, it is the awareness of current world and domestic developments, but secondly, how to stand above it, looking into the future.

At various times, the brass band has played an important role in Latvia’s everyday life – playing green balls, funerals and weddings, as well as in historical events and freedom battles. The concert is designed as a story of the masculinity and growth of the Latvian people – from the shepherd’s table, the archer’s songs and the soldier’s majesty – to the immortality at parties and deep emotionality at the turns of the ages.

All amateur wind orchestras of Latvia (60 in total with about 1500 musicians), soloists, folk and contemporary dancers will take part in the concert. This will be followed by the green ball!

Artistic director of the grand concert – Jānis Retenais, assistant – Tomas Kokamegi; director and screenplay author – Elīna Apsite; scenographer – Gints Gabrāns; lighting artist – Egils Kupčs; choreographers – Diana Gavar and Lilia Lipor; interlude music author – Edgars Lipors; project manager – Armands Leimanis.
