The Evolution and History of Skirts: From Ancient Times to Modern Fashion Trends

Everything was turned upside down.

From century to century, the fashion for certain outfits has invariably changed. Today, the priority is comfortable clothing made from environmentally friendly natural materials, whereas 200 years ago, even in the summer, people wore several layers of clothing. Over time, the attitude towards skirts has changed a lot.

Today it is difficult to imagine gentlemen in midi or maxi, but initially skirts were part of the men’s wardrobe. In ancient times, the Egyptians wrapped cotton or linen bandages around the torso and legs, and the Greeks and Romans wore tunics. Today, the tradition of wearing “men’s” skirts is preserved only among the Scots.

Once upon a time, the length of the skirt depended on belonging to a particular class, as well as on social status. Ordinary citizens wore knee length, while representatives of the nobility and aristocracy had capes and floor-length skirts – the longer, the more respectable and beautiful.
