The “Everyone” initiative invites every citizen of Latvia to vote for the strengthening of human rights at the level of the European Union Press release

July 26, 2022.

The information was prepared by Rūta Grikman.

The “Everyone” initiative group is gaining more and more popularity in Europe, which calls on every citizen of the European Union (EU), including Latvia, to be active and vote for the expansion of EU fundamental rights, including six new articles, in order to ensure the resolution of essential human rights issues on a European scale.

This is not a political initiative, as it was initiated by a specially created foundation called Stiftung Jeder Mensch eV, which has united private individuals and well-known opinion leaders in many countries, founded in October 2020 with the aim of including the idea of the expansion of fundamental rights in the political agenda. Currently, 268 thousand citizens from all over the EU have supported the initiative, providing online voting opportunities on the website https://you.wemove.eu/campaigns/for-new-fundamental-rights-in-europe-lv.

14 EU member states, including Latvia, have united in the “Everyone” movement, whose members are convinced that the challenges of recent years, including Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, clearly show that Europe is at a crossroads, when democracy, the rule of law and common values and rights in the EU are being tested more than ever before.

“We now have a historic opportunity to change Europe as an entity capable of acting with responsibility for the future. The governments of the EU member states must not avoid this responsibility. We need a Europe for the people, which is clearly shown by the signatures already collected on our online platform, as well as by people who are recognized by the public support from 14 EU countries,” says Bijan Moini, chairman of the “Everyone” initiative fund “Jeder Mench”.

The idea of the initiative is to supplement the EU Convention with six articles on the expansion of fundamental rights:

Article 1 – Environment. Everyone has the right to live in a healthy and protected environment.

Article 2 – Digital self-determination. Everyone has the right to digital self-determination. Excessive profiling or manipulation of people is prohibited.

Article 3 – Artificial intelligence. Everyone has the right to know that all algorithms applied to them are transparent, verifiable and fair. The main decisions must be made by a person.

Article 4 – Truth. Everyone has the right to trust that the statements of public office holders are true.

Article 5 – Globalization. Everyone has the right to receive only those goods and services that are produced and provided in accordance with general human rights.

Article 6 – Fundamental rights court proceedings. Everyone has the right to file a claim in the European courts when the fundamental rights of the Charter are systematically violated.

The “Everyone” initiative (www.everyone-initiative.eu) is an international movement that calls on people to vote for the extension of the European Union’s constitutional convention, ensuring an even higher level of human rights than it has been until now. 14 countries united in it, including Austria, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Poland, Slovakia, Spain and Sweden, jointly call to determine the future direction of Europe now.

The foundation’s members include personalities from the fields of culture, law, business and science, such as sustainability researcher Maja Göpela, the president of the Kärlis Kahane Foundation, Patricia Kahane, European, economic and constitutional law expert Ulrich Karpenstein and Remo Klinger, a lawyer specializing in environmental and administrative law. The board members are lawyer, author and civil rights activist Bijan Moini and entrepreneur Alexa von Salmuth. Eva Bertram has been the managing director since December 2021. The foundation is financed by donations and income from the sale of the book “Jeder Mensch”.
