The duel Emmanuel Macron (La République en Marche)-Marine Le Pen (National Rally) is not successful in Troyes. Between their two clashes separated by five years, the abstentionists have largely exceeded the 30% mark. And like two weeks ago, during the first round of this 2022 presidential election, one in three Trojans therefore shunned the ballot box. A scale not far from unprecedented.
Emmanuel Macron loses more than 1,500 votes compared to 2017
Going back into the past, we can measure its degree. In 2012, during the confrontation between François Hollande and Nicolas Sarkozy, only 23.4% of the inhabitants of the tricasse city were absent subscribers. And 20 years ago, in an otherwise tense context due to the unexpected presence of Jean-Marie Le Pen, only one in four Trojans abstained.
It is amusing to note that Jacques Chirac had amassed 17,881 votes, against 4,562 for his rival from the National Front. A textbook case of the demonization carried out by the former Frontist party and the explosion of the Republican roadblock (see also pages 6 and 7). Despite this and even by winning votes in the second round (1,024 more) compared to 2017 and by tilting two other municipalities in the Troyes conurbation (see elsewhere), Marine Le Pen remains within distant reach of Emmanuel Macron . An Emmanuel Macron who, for his part, lost 1,607 votes in the same period of time.
She progresses everywhere
This trend of ever-increasing abstention can also be seen in other pillar municipalities of the agglomeration: La Chapelle-Saint-Luc, a Melenchonist stronghold that flirts with 35% abstention, Saint-André-les- Orchards, Sainte-Savine, Pont-Sainte-Marie, Les Noës-près-Troyes, which are around 30%… It was certainly expected, but almost everywhere, including in places where participation is traditionally high, the abstention gained ground.
If it is not a surprise for François Baroin with regard to Troyes (see opposite), there is reason to wonder how far this wave can go.
Buchères and Barberey have rocked
In 2017, all the municipalities of the Troyes agglomeration had placed Emmanuel Macron in the lead. Including Buchères and Barberey-Saint-Sulpice. However, for this 2022 remake, the switch took place in these two municipalities in favor of Marine Le Pen. For the first, quite clearly moreover (56.2%), while it was in a pocket handkerchief for the second (51.5%). Particularity of these reversals, the abstention is much less strong there than in a good part of the agglomeration – 21.3% in Buchères and 23% in Barberey-Saint-Sulpice. They are also joined by their geographical location, at the gates of rural areas where Marine Le Pen is acclaimed.

François Baroin, mayor of Troyes: “I am struck by the territorial divide”
François Baroin, whether in the first or second round, one in three Trojans did not go to vote. It surprises you ?
This is not a surprising fact. It is a recurrence that the mobilization here is weaker for national deadlines. We strive to correct it on a daily basis, to renew the link through our neighborhood meetings for example.
On this issue, you clearly point to the responsibility of Emmanuel Macron (see page 9).
I am struck by this territorial divide, whereas I had given the alert several times when I was president of the Association of Mayors of France. He will have to try to repair in the next mandate. He can do it very quickly with a great law of local freedom. Bring administrative management, buildings and hospital staff back to the mayor, as well as housing, sport, culture, etc.
You don’t think it’s a global responsibility of the whole French political sphere?
I do not hold him responsible for all the faults and misfortunes of Israel. The dramatic collapse is also, for the first time, the two government parties (The Republicans and the Socialist Party, editor’s note) erased in the first round. Without forgetting the social networks, where the feeling of personal truth is not fought and whose messages are repeated by the media.
