Arjen Lubach is with him The Evening Show with Arjen Lubach dived into the world of nutritional supplements. “Do healthy people really need so many pills?”

Lubach came across a vitamin advertisement featuring Ruud Gullit, a former professional football player. “He’s not the only one to blame.”

Influencers or celebrities try to sell all kinds of vitamins and supplements in more than one way, as can be seen in the broadcast of The Evening Show with Arjen Lubach. “Especially on Instagram, influencers consume half a pharmacy’s worth of vitamins, minerals and other supplements every day.”

“I know heart patients with HIV at a techno party who take fewer pills,” Lubach jokes. Does it make sense to take so many supplements?, he wonders.

Misleading claims about nutritional supplements

“According to companies like this, almost everyone could use a pill and they also say that it is scientifically substantiated, while almost no one in the Netherlands has a vitamin deficiency,” says Lubach.

There are rules for misleading claims on packaging. “For example, look at ‘magnesium’ and ‘fatigue’. You may say: ‘Magnesium for fatigue. But you can’t say: ‘Magnesium fights fatigue’.” That’s crazy, Lubach thinks. “Why would you take something for fatigue if it doesn’t help against fatigue?”

‘And that on the NPO’

“The providers of nutritional supplements even censor the reviews on their website because satisfied customers often claim things that are not allowed.” Then you get a review like: ‘This product keeps my… in top condition’.

Then Lubach gets the new program The BioHack Project that could count on a lot of criticism after the first broadcast. “This seems like a program to just barely kill celebrities with cool stunts, but then I hear a familiar voice. The postman fantasy from Instagram who sells you magnesium! And that on the NPO.”

‘Lucrative quackery’

Lubach calls it a “lucrative form of quackery.” Viewers on social media mainly agree with Lubach.
