With only one match won out of the 8 played on Friday at Whistling Straits, the record of Padraig Harrington’s first day of men’s doubles is starved. The choice to renew Rory McIlroy, transparent in foursomes, in the afternoon or to leave Garcia to rest while his association in the morning with Jon Rahm had worked perfectly, raises questions.
It is certainly a bit early to pass judgment on Padraig Harrington’s captaincy, but he is not in a rush to say that his strategy has failed at the moment. Not really helped by its leaders on paper, McIlroy, Poulter, Westwood, or Casey, Paddy is skating.
A historic advance!
After taking the advantage 3-1 in Foursomes in the morning, Steve Stricker’s Americans largely dominated the 4 balls in the afternoon. Even the wind finally present on the shores of Lake Michigan did nothing, the Europeans showed themselves with rare powerlessness, only succeeding in scoring on the board thanks to two draws snatched in a fierce fight. This is the first time since 1975 that the Americans have taken such a 6-2 advantage!
Wiesberger is there
In the first match of the afternoon the good news is the good behavior of the first Austrian in history to compete in a Ryder Cup. Bernd Wiesberger was not impressed with his entry birdie on the 1!
Associated with Paul Casey, already beaten in the morning with another rookie Viktor Hovland, the 8-time winner on the European Tour, however, did not manage to get in the way of the duo Dustin Johnson / Xander Sc Chaudele. The former world number 1 in particular, was terribly effective under the watchful eye of one of his many supporters, Michael Jordan!

Rahm and Hatton float, McIlroy and Lowry sink
In match 2 the heavyweight duel between Jon Rahm, flanked by English pit bull Tyrrell Hatton, and Bryson DeChambeau, associated with rookie Scottie Scheffler, resulted in a few classic 4-ball passes.
We will retain Bryson DeChambeau’s surface-to-surface missile at 5. A drive of 380 meters via a route unknown until now and which allowed the colossus of Dallas to make short work of this par 5 of 530 meters. Half a wedge later and the Bison signed an eagle.

Undecided until the end, the match ended in a draw when Hatton went for a final birdie at 18 to avoid a greater deficit for his teammates.

Deficit that had already deepened Rory McIlroy next to his golf course in the morning and no more successful in the afternoon (1 eagle, and two bogeys).
Associated this time with his compatriot Shane Lowry, he could do nothing to thwart the plans of a raging Finau / English duo. Archi dominated the two Irish lowered their flag at the exit of the green of 15 after the Americans recorded 4 birdies in 6 holes!
Saturday morning Harrington will do without the services of his two compatriots whom he has chosen to sideline. Just like Poulter and Fleetwood.

Fleetwood and Hovland miss the mark
Finally the last game will leave a bitter taste in Tommy Fleetwood and Viktor Hovland.
3Up after 7 holes the two men missed the opportunity to drive the point home several times and saw their opponents gradually nibble their delay.
Or mental Patrick Cantlay and especially Justin Thomas, author of a fantastic eagle at 16 stuck to the scoreboard two holes from the end, managing to preserve the invincibility of Team USA in this session of 4 balls!
