The European Union is taking charge of the chargers. One standard is just the beginning

One standard of chargers for all electronic devices is a proposal that has really few users. We got used to it very quickly USB-C, most manufacturers decide to use this charging standard even without an order from the European Union. However, this one intends to go a step further in the field of chargers.

Currently, the main opponent of the top-down introduction of the charging port standard is Apple, which does not want to abandon the lightning ports in favor of USB-C. Nevertheless, it can be expected that sooner or later USB-C will become the only binding standard for charging electronic devices. Arguments for caring for the environment are raised, which are difficult to fight with.

However, reducing the number of unnecessary charging cables is not the end of the EU’s plans for chargers. Anna Cavazzini – chair of the European Parliament’s consumer protection committee – wants chargers to no longer be sold in a set with electronic devices. In her opinion, this will significantly reduce the amount of electro-waste generated each year. Even 1000 tons per year.

These changes are expected to take effect from 2024, so there is still some time before that happens. On the one hand, they cannot be denied that they make sense in terms of reducing the impact of human activity on the environment. On the other hand, you have to face the truth. The costs of this change will be borne by consumers, who will have to pay extra for chargers that are currently included in the price of a given device.
