The European Union (EU) plans to implement programs to enhance the Philippines’ maritime industry before the end of the year. The EU Commission for Transport recently announced that it will continue to recognise seafarers’ certificates issued by the Philippine government, commending Manila’s efforts to comply with the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping for seafarers. However, it specified the areas for improvement, including monitoring, supervision and evaluation of training, examination and assessment of competence, and program and course design. EU Ambassador to the Philippines Luc Veron said the EU will ensure that the Philippines adheres to standards, while providing technical assistance to improve maritime education. The envoy stressed that this will not only benefit Filipino seafarers but also their families, as the programs will enable them to work on the best ships worldwide.
