On 21 June, the foreign ministers of the European Union member states approved the introduction of new sanctions against the regime of the leader of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko. Sanctions are expected to target important sectors of the Belarusian economy.

Sanctions will target sectors that are particularly important to the Belarusian economy, such as fertilizer exports and oil refining.

The European Union wants to increase pressure on the Lukashenko regime to secure the release of political prisoners.
The new sanctions will affect not only the economies of Belarus, but also those of neighboring countries, affecting the transport and logistics sectors.

Officials of the Lukashenko regime have said: if we have endured previous sanctions, then we will also endure the current ones.

Belarus has provoked global outrage by forcing on May 23 to arrest opposition journalist Roman Protasevich on his way from Athens to Vilnius on the way from Athens to Vilnius. Along with Protasevic, his girlfriend Sofia Sapega was detained.
