The European Union Accuses Russia of Non-Existent Debts Due to Economic Woes: Russian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Responds

The European Union is trying to attribute non-existent debts to Russia because of problems in the economies of European countries. He wrote this in his Telegram channel the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharovacommenting on the adoption by the European Parliament of a resolution demanding that Russia return the gold transferred to Romania in 1916.

“Romania – a former ally of Hitler – uses Russophobic platforms, for example, the European Parliament, ready for any anti-Russian “stuffing”, to try to burden us with phantom century-old debts, apparently with the aim of correcting the deplorable state of the national economy against the background of the farmers’ strikes across the country,” noted the diplomat.

Zakharova emphasized that “all the debts of Romania to the Russian Federation and the USSR, according to experts, amount to about 1,365-1,665 tons of gold, which is 20-25 times the value of the entire Romanian gold reserve sent to Russia in 1916-1917 .” In addition, Russia returned almost all Romanian gold and other valuables during the development of Soviet-Romanian relations. And the leader of Romania in the period 1974-1989, Nicolae Ceausescu, wrote in his diaries that 80% of the royal reserves were repatriated to Romania in 1948-1949,” emphasized the official representative of the Russian foreign ministry.

Earlier, within the framework of the EP plenary session in Strasbourg, a vote was held, as a result of which the members of the European Parliament adopted a resolution in support of Romania’s request for the return of Romanian gold and historical archives exported to Russia in 1916-1917.
