The European Parliament’s Decision on Displaced Syrians in Lebanon and Lebanon’s Response

During a memorial ceremony in the town of Tirfa, MP Ali Khreis affirmed that “the decision taken by the European Parliament regarding the necessity of keeping the displaced Syrians in Lebanon and not facilitating their return to their country, and accusing the Lebanese people of racism is unacceptable and we do not accept this decision, because it constitutes interference and aggression against Lebanon and Syria.” And it came at a time when Lebanon is preoccupied with internal crises and developments on the border with occupied Palestine.

He said, “What is required today is for the Lebanese government to address this decision and for there to be full coordination with the Syrian government so that the displaced will return voluntarily and safely to their country.”

He added, “The cost of the Syrian displacement in Lebanon is not less than 2 to 4 billion annually,” stressing that “it is a plot orchestrated by these countries that produced such a decision.”

He concluded by talking about “the Taef Accord and the necessity of its full implementation. Lebanon cannot be divided, and the advocates of partition want to completely destroy Lebanon. We, on the Shiite and national levels, are fully committed to the Taif Accord and its full implementation. Let them retreat from their suspicious ambitions that aim to tear the country apart, and let us go to Meaningful dialogue, let us move away from destructive rhetoric, and elect a new president for the republic.
