The European Parliament calls for universal access to drinking water | Radiocable.com – Internet Radio

The European Parliament approved a report on access to water as a human right, in which it requires states to ensure “universal, adequate and affordable access to sufficient, quality and safe drinking water, as well as better access to water for sanitation “. . But it doesn’t stop there it also urges that defenders of environmental rights be protected “so that they work without suffering violence and intimidation”.

They ask the Union to promote protection mechanisms at international, regional and national level to ensure that the right to water is realized. And they warn: “The Sanitation is not optional for States but an executive right “.

They also urge Union delegations and Member State missions to raise issues such as the situation of human rights defenders and human rights NGOs. Promote the safety and freedom of environmental rights defenders “to work without being subjected to violence and intimidation”.

Also, they require that water management responds mainly to environmental interests – “being a fundamental necessity for plants, animals and humans” – and social, “Above all the job placement and the improvement of the income and security of people in a situation of poverty”. And they underline that “the improvement of water supply and sanitation, as well as the management of water resources”, it can drive sustainable economic growth countries and contribute significantly to poverty reduction.
