The European Parliament approved over 1 billion euros in aid for 5 EU countries that suffered from floods last year – 2024-10-09 07:58:00

On Tuesday, October 8, MEPs approved more than €1 billion help from the EU Solidarity Fund to support recovery efforts in five post-crisis EU countries floods in 2023

Support is for Italy, Slovenia, Austria, Greece and France after severe flooding in 2023.

The grant will cover part of the emergency response and recovery costs

The assistance in the amount of EUR 1,028,541,689 from the European Union Solidarity Fund (EUSF) will be distributed as follows:

Italy: €378.8 million for the Emilia-Romagna region following the damage caused by the floods in May 2023 and an additional €67.8 million for the Tuscany region following the floods in October and November 2023.

Slovenia: EUR 428.4 million to remedy the consequences of the floods in August 2023.

Austria: €5.2 million to repair flood damage from August 2023.

Greece: €101.5 million to support recovery efforts following the September 2023 floods.

France: €46.7 million to cover flood damage suffered in the Hauts-de-France region in November 2023.

Assistance from the Fund will cover part of the costs of crisis and recovery operations, including repairing damaged infrastructure, protecting cultural heritage and carrying out clean-up operations.

MEPs point out that the number of major and devastating natural disasters in Europe is increasing and believe that the budget of the European Union Solidarity Fund or its equivalent should be increased in light of the Commission’s upcoming proposal for a new multiannual financial framework.

The aid package was adopted in European Parliament with 632 votes for, 7 against and 3 abstentions.
